We have spent days removing deck hardware and I think we are only about half way there. We spent the better part of the day removing the windlass which I am going to outline the specifics of in a separate post. Here is Erin catching the bottom half of the windlass as it dropped through the deck:
I happen to think the anchor locker is quite comfy. Erin didn’t like it as much as me, I think water was dripping on her or something.
But to get to the point of this post, we wanted to warn any A37 owners but really any old boat owners in general, we found exposed core in all of the holes through the deck. It is absolutely worth the days work to take your windlass apart and make sure you do not have exposed core.
You can see in the above pictures that some of the core is all rotted out. Check out the photo to the right, our moisture meter is a 0% – 40% meter, the core is absolutely sopping, dripping, rotten, wet.
It wasn’t a surprise or anything, we were taking out the windlass to re-core that area of the deck but I am continually astounded at finding any hardware on any boat going through a cored deck without any thought to the core.
Later we took the top layer of fiberglass off to let it all dry out – it was like a mushy swimming pool in there! No good.
The hard work will all pay off in the end. Think of the sense of satisfaction of having done it yourself. I will join you soon on my own boat. I can’t wait!!!
